Commemorative Series, 317-320 (?). AE (Bronze, 17 mm, 1.28 g), Thessalonica (?). Eight-rayed star. Rev. O / C S / C within laurel wreath terminating in central medaillon. Bendall, Anonymous silver, RN 158 (2002), Type D. Cohen VIII, p. 272, 54. Göbl, Antike Numismatik, pl. 9, 105. Ramskold, Coins and medallions (2011), p. 151, 16A (this coin). RIC -. RSC -. Very rare and in exceptional condition for the issue. Minor smoothing, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, ex Gorny & Mosch 125, 13 October 2003, 581.

The enigmatic 'O / C S / C' star medalettes were described by Ramskold, Coins and medallions (2011) and attributed to Constantinopolis, but in light of recent discoveries (see lots 2812-2817 above and 2820-2821 below), an attribution to Thessalonica must now be considered. No convincing interpretation of the letters 'O / C S / C' has yet been found.
